For a dawn in 2023

The famous phrase from a Stephen King novel, "The night is darkest just before the dawn" could perhaps be a promise for the year 2023. Whoever its author may be, this phrase is in essence optimistic, especially for those of us who have been stuck in a night that has been going on for more than 20 years, and whose darkest darkness we witnessed yesterday when the opposition finished demonstrating before Venezuelans its true essence.

I am not going to subject you on this last day of the year 2022, to an analysis of why the National Assembly decided what it decided. I modestly believe that I have already done so in the notes published from this corner of the web throughout the year. A scorpion is a scorpion, and no matter how many promises it makes not to bite us in the middle of the river, it will end up doing it on our back because it is its nature. And when I refer to that animal, I am not referring to the nickname foisted on the micro opposition that went over to the regime, but to all those who asked in December 2015 for the trust of the opposition people to solve Maduro's problem if they were given the majority of the National Assembly. They were given, and yesterday they proved their nature.

So the question is not whether it is possible to cross a river with a scorpion on our backs, because we already know the answer, but whether we will continue to believe in the promises of the scorpion. That is why I refer to King's famous phrase. I have the deep feeling -which is not conviction- that we will finally stop doing so, which opens the enormous possibility of passing this river alone, without the scorpion.

But is it possible to do that? In my opinion, it was always possible, as all the victories of mankind were possible, when at last a people is convinced of its own capabilities. Who are these people who tell us that we will "defeat" the regime in an electoral encounter in 2024 -or 2023- with them riding on our back? Yesterday they confirmed what some of us insisted they were: Scorpions that sting because that's their nature....

Yesterday's generalized disappointment -which for me is fundamental proof of the opposition's surrender to the regime- is only the beginning, and a fundamental and indispensable prerequisite to take the necessary steps that will lead us to a true defeat of the tyranny, sometime after this last day of the year 2022. Whether it will be in the short, medium or long term, will depend on how widespread that disappointment was, and on the credibility given by Venezuelans to the excuses given by the official opposition to constitute a de facto parliamentary government in Venezuela, bypassing the Constitution.

And the excuse that everyone ignores or violates the Constitution without consequences is not valid. That is like removing the red alternator failure light from the dashboard of your car because it bothers you. Sooner or later you will get into an accident. The fact that you ignore it does not mean that it is still there as a reminder of something out of order that must be repaired and that is rotting the social body of the country. Nor is it worth the excuse that the politicians of the majority of the parties "are not assholes" and know what they are doing. I believe they do, but it is not exactly for the benefit of all, and that is the real situation here!

This justification of the liveliness of some criminals with political power is what has brought us to this new limit of the catastrophe of continental magnitude that we are still living. That is why we should turn our backs on them and leave them alone for any initiative they may summon us to. It is easy to say because this pleiad of scorpions -in the broadest sense of the word- constitutes to this day the recognized leadership of the country's official opposition. And as of today, they can no longer be counted on.

And you will say: "And then? nothingness? political vacuum? There are always alternatives and that is why we must begin to listen and submit other proposals for everyone's consideration. We must open new channels so that the majority river that wishes to get out of this regime manifests itself with the power it already has and passes like a tsunami both to the regime and its opposition.

At the end of the year 2022, the political circumstances seem to present only one way to face the tragedy we are living: to go to an "opposition primary" and then run for elections with the regime, hoping for an unrealistic result. Yesterday's events showed that doing so is a mistake that will be paid by the next generations of Venezuelans, and each one of us will bear part of that grave responsibility, not only the scorpions that yesterday stung Guaidó and sunk him and his Presidency-in-Charge to the bottom of the river. Political parties could do nothing without popular support. And that is the answer at this juncture: the support of the people.

Not to participate in these primaries and subsequent presidential elections would be a more than proportional response to the unconstitutional elimination of the Presidency-in-Charge and the form of parliamentary government by means of commissions distributed among the same parties, disregarding the recommendations of the most renowned constitutional lawyers in the country. It remains for them to feel the political rejection of the Venezuelan people.

From ANCO we have insisted, since before and throughout 2022, on a strong idea that has no discussion whatsoever: Let the people decide! Who can object to that? That is the fundamental principle of democracy, the will of the people; and given the political conditions of the country, without the intermediation of any force interested in the continuation of the prevailing regime. But making this happen requires the creation of the necessary and sufficient conditions for a call, with international arbitration, for an Original National Constituent Assembly.

This possibility would be much closer to us to the extent that people become convinced that there is definitely no other way to reestablish the rule of the Constitution and rescue the institutions we have lost because of an arrangement of interests, external and internal, opposition and regime, that leave out the Venezuelan people. If we become aware of this in its correct magnitude, we would not be looking for anything else but the way to make that popular constituent will possible and expressed, deciding what to do with the regime, taking the first step towards the reestablishment of the constitutional order and the Refoundation of the Nation.

These are not mere words to end a year full of political conflicts with extreme poverty and exodus, under the repression of a tyranny, nor the desire of a madman desperate for things to change. It is the conviction of one who, on reaching this final day of another disastrous year, feels hopeful of the possibility of a full dawn because he sees with difficulty that there is a darker night than that of this last week of December 2022.

If by that maximum darkness we get to have that collective conscience of the people that puts us on the way to summon ourselves to decide our destiny through the ONLY constitutional instrument that points towards the Refoundation of the Nation, it would not matter that the dawn would not be 2023, because we would have taken the first step of realizing our condition, but we are willing to change for the better. If this is so, it will have been worthwhile to go through this disastrous year with a political opposition that we do not deserve as a people. With God's help we will find the way to make a new political solution possible for this New Year of the Lord 2023. Once again, and as every year, I deeply thank all my followers for their support and solidarity, and I only wish you a Happy New Year 2023, full of health, success and opportunities for all of you...
