After watching the interview held by Antonio Ledezma, with Patricia Poleo, Ángel Monagas and José Antonio Colina, in the YouTube channel Factores de Poder, I ended up confirming how difficult it is for any politician, and especially an experienced one, to defend the contradictory actions of a very mediocre opposition, and at the same time try to justify the path that was decided to undertake with the best electoral bet that the opposition can have, the candidacy of María Corina Machado (MCM), and her slogan of fighting "until the end", especially when each person has his own interpretation of that.
The regime, of course, had its own, proceeding against Antonio Ledezma, requesting his arrest and extradition (see in Spanish La Voz de América, Un aliado de MCM desempolva la "desobediencia" política en Venezuela, at https://www.vozdeamerica.com/a/maria-corina-machado-antonio-ledezma-desobediencia-civil-venezuela-primaria-presidenciales-2024-constitucion-protestas-/7234152.html).
But let's take a closer look at what Antonio Ledezma said in that interview and in what context he said it, in order to be able to analyze the matter properly:
Patricia Poleo: ...I am left
with two things in closing: that there is a plan and that the objective is
civil rebellion accompanied by military rebellion...That is the objective, I am
left with that.
Antonio Ledezma: The only way
to be able to carry out the registration of a woman who is being vetoed by the
regime is by launching civil disobedience...that is no deception.
Patricia Poleo: ...and the
support to the constitution on the part of the military?
Antonio Ledezma: ...and they are talking to the military, that is normal. That is not conspiracy. There is no conspiracy. There are people who call and we talk, and they ask us not to say their name, and they ask sometimes to go in disguise, all that is natural.... In the first place, the alleged plan with military rebellion was inferred by Patricia Poleo as a journalist, not by Ledezma. The interviewee spoke of pressure from the civil society to be able to carry out the registration of a candidate that has been vetoed by the regime, in the event that she were to win the primaries, indicating that the country has not been deceived in this regard. This is, in my opinion, a legitimate exercise that we Venezuelans have to civically protest against something that we consider an illegal outrage not only against MCM, but against any Venezuelan who claims his legitimate right to aspire to a freely elected position.
However, journalist Poleo insists on the support of the Constitution by the military. This is an issue that all Venezuelans have insisted on: that the military obey Article 328 of the Constitution, especially in its fundamental definition: "The National Armed Forces constitute an essentially professional institution, without political militancy... In the fulfillment of its functions, it is at the service of the Nation and in no case of any person or political partiality...", something that the Chávez and now Maduro's regime has permanently disrespected, using it as its praetorian guard to maintain itself in power. In this there is no doubt or anything new.
However, I noticed in the interview, in all this context, that both Poleo and Ledezma, in the same conversation, are talking about two completely different times. Ledezma is in the time of the primaries and journalist Poleo is in a time beyond that - MCM presidential candidate winning an election - when she brings the military into the conversation. In primary time, the military, even if we know that they do not respect the Constitution, do not play any role at this time, as they do in presidential elections.
It would not make any sense to conspire with the military to defend the right of an opposition candidate to be registered to compete in a presidential election, not to mention that it would be stupid to bring them in at that time, but it would make sense to summon them to defend the right of all Venezuelans to review the electoral results in case the regime decides to ignore the decision of the Popular Sovereignty in a presidential election. Henrique Capriles had it in his hands to summon the people -military included- to defend the final decision of Venezuelans, in the April 2013 elections, and our right to have every vote of that election recounted. But it did not do so. That will remain in the memory of Venezuelans and who did not have what it took to go "all the way". And I think that is what MCM's famous slogan means, at that moment.
But at this moment, they are not talking about presidential elections, among other reasons, because MCM -at least formally- is not yet a presidential candidate. Journalist Patricia Poleo talks about the time when the military should make the difference in an election, because that is what they would ultimately be talking about when it comes to deciding to whom the power corresponds after a presidential election, and who should enforce the people's decision. In other words, the military. To make a hypothetical judgment of reaching civil disobedience with the military, to provoke the fall of Maduro, with the excuse of registering a female candidate, anyone could do it in another context, but not based on that interview.
When Ledezma affirms that the military calls the opposition leaders, what he is doing is confirming the reason why there are more military than civilians imprisoned in the dungeons of the regime. The level of desperation that the military, who are still institutional and obedient to the Constitution with the conduct of the regime, must be very great when they expose themselves in this way. And to expect them to be the ones to come out to defend MCM to be a presidential candidate, is little less than ridiculous, if that is the motivation they would have to intervene, since at this moment there are others much more serious in the country and they have not done so.
I have been in complete disagreement with insisting on an electoral route with criminals who have hijacked the Electoral Power in Venezuela, opposition primaries included. I have written that many times from this modest corner of the web. The geopolitical situation of Venezuela and the reasons for the permanence of the regime in power are so complex that they require much more political elaboration than thinking that their solution is a simple presidential election that we would supposedly win with the hijackers in control of power.
The only redeemable aspect of the MCM's crusade against all factors -of this and the other sidewalk- is the construction of a true opposition leadership capable of organizing a consistent civil resistance, both inside and outside the country, with a serious and realistic plan of local and global scope in the short, medium and long term, to put an end to tyranny at its roots. That should be the real meaning of the famous slogan, and the rest just the excuse to organize that resistance. If this is still not clear at this point, we will be facing a new disappointment...
