The Trojan donkeys

The historical stratagem, related in Homer's classic Odyssey, where the Greeks gave the Trojans, as an offering to Athena at the siege of the walled city of Troy, a gigantic horse where Odysseus hid his best warriors to open the gates of the city from inside, has served as an example in all times to describe how the enemy is deceived and destroyed from within by his ingenuity.

However, sometimes when reference is made to this stratagem, some do not explain it in the correct sense, either out of malice or ignorance of reality. Such is the case of the recent political analysis published by the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, UCAB, by Professor Benigno Alarcón, entitled "Los Caballos de Troya", which states, among other things, the following:

"Although there is an important level of consensus around the convenience of a single candidacy to be elected in a primary, it is important to understand that the perfect unity to which we aspire will never be achieved because not all "oppositions" are oppositions. The reality is that among the oppositions there are actors who play outside unity because they do not believe in it, which may be legitimate. But there are others that play against the opposition and in favor of the government because they have become the Trojan Horses of the regime to divide the opposition unity and disperse the vote of its voters to turn them into irrelevant electoral minorities. While the oppositions that have separated from the unity because they do not believe in it, or because of the adversities between leaderships, which although it is a common phenomenon should never be over the objective of achieving political change, should not be a cause for concern because they are true democratic oppositions that need unity as much as the parties that make up the Democratic Unity Table (Mesa de la Unidad Democrática), Therefore, I have no doubt that they will be the first ones interested in demonstrating their leadership in a primary, as already stated, for example, by María Corina Machado, whom we can consider a faithful representative of the opposition that is not part of the MUD... " (emphasis added) (see in Spanish Podcast "Análisis Político": Los Caballos de Troya 3/05/2022, in https://youtu.be/lLCx8-r4Wyc,  min 6:29).

Here it is worth asking from whom this important level of consensus comes from. Clearly, it will not be from the Venezuelans, the majority of whom do not agree to wait two more years of torture by the regime to solve this serious political conflict with elections, but rather from those who paradoxically accuse others of doing what they themselves do of acting in favor of the regime, doing what the regime precisely wants to perpetuate itself in power: elections controlled by them.

An opposition primary, with all that it implies, is already putting the country into that "normalization" that Maduro so much wants to promote the electoral circus that we have already repeated so many times and that the official opposition of the MUD/FA parties needs. Then, who are those who play against the opposition, understanding as opposition the true feeling of Venezuelans to get out of this endless nightmare? Those who claim to represent the Venezuelan opposition people? Because, who are those who have constituted themselves as true Trojan donkeys so that the regime cannot be defeated, playing the electoral game two years in advance? And I call them so because if Odysseus instead of using a horse had used a donkey, insulting Athena, of course he would not have been able to get the doors opened to the gift to conquer the city of Troy.

But what most caught my attention was that apart from accusing someone else of acting in favor of the regime, a responsibility that only corresponds to the so-called electoralist "democratic unity", they put in the sack of their primaries, none other than María Corina Machado, who almost a month before this UCAB podcast, had clearly established her position in relation to this electoral circus being organized by the MUD/FA with the help of this political think tank:

"Do not count on us to accept crumbs and sell the idea that the regime is thinking of holding a clean and free election in 2024, please! Do you believe that the regime is thinking of holding a clean and free election that will produce a change in 2024? Or are they setting up a new electoral farce to once again elect the opposition candidate? Venezuelans already have a very long rope of this, with more than 30 elections and with less and less democracy. Therefore, what is more convenient for the regime is to see this crowd getting into an electoral fair with whistles and flags promoting candidates in a fantasy country because it is controlled by the tyranny. Gentlemen: first things first. For a candidate to be useful there must be a real election. And for there to be a real election here in Venezuela, first we have to elect a new political leadership..." (see Position of María Corina Machado on the electoral issue, 6/04/2022, en  https://twitter.com/MariaCorinaYA/status/1511826085448626181, min 1:17).

What part of this forceful "do not count on us" to these electoral practices with the regime, rejected by the majority of Venezuelans, did the political analysts of the UCAB not understand?

As a member of the university community, I have the greatest respect for research, knowledge, technology and the lights that objectively come out of the universities, to clarify the path we must follow, to restore the freedom and democracy destroyed by this tyranny. That is why I find it hard to understand that not a university in particular, but any university, instead of going deeper into the causes and reasons that have led us to this political disaster never seen in the history of the country, proposing new paths and studies in favor of a solution that includes all of us, has taken sides in favor of one part of the country, in favor of the other, has taken sides in favor of a party that claims to be the opposition, not to favor the population but specific political actors who have demonstrated an attitude of open and proven cohabitation with the regime so that things continue as they are, becoming one more political factor, instead of a guiding reference. In the opinion of many, this should not be the role of the Venezuelan university in the solution of the tragedy the country is going through.

And I am not saying that any group or person, belonging to the academia or any other sector, does not support the political option of their preference, but that the institutional image of a prestigious university is openly used to convince the population to follow a particular political path. The country is divided between those of us who DO NOT BELIEVE in the electoralist route of the MUD/FA parties, which has done us terrible harm and threatens to continue doing so, by entering into the dance of the millions that a primary means when the country is falling apart, and those of us who believe in the need to elect, not a candidate for a primary election, but a NEW POLITICAL DIRECTION that will truly lead us to the expulsion of a regime that controls the electoral apparatus of the country. This is not a fairy tale and must be debated with the seriousness and magnitude of the problem.

The Venezuelan political debate is set out in those terms, and not through a Manichean interpretation that points out good and bad in the opposition party. Let the country decide who is and who is not in favor of leaving the regime immediately. Let Venezuelans decide who are the Trojan donkeys.
