The fable of the scorpion opposition

I would like to begin by recalling the fable of the Scorpion and the Frog, attributed to the Greek author Aesop, from the 6th century BC, to put things in context:

The Scorpion and the Frog

A scorpion approached the bank of a river and asked a frog to carry him across on its back.

The frog was suspicious and said, “How do I know you won't sting me? If you do, I'll die.”

The scorpion replied cunningly, “Don't be silly. If I sting you, we'll both sink, and I can't swim either. I have no logical reason to sting you.”

The frog was convinced by the scorpion's reasoning and agreed. She carried him on her back and began to swim.

Halfway across the river, the frog felt a sharp, terrible pain: the scorpion had stung her. As they both sank into the water, the dying frog cried out, “But why did you do it? Now we'll both die.”

And the scorpion, as he drowned, replied, “I couldn't help it. It's my nature.”

(popular anonymous text) (emphasis added).

The moral of the fable is that a scorpion is not inherently “evil.” It cannot avoid the harmful behaviors that are in its nature, even if it costs it its life. No one can blame a shark for attacking and eating someone on a beach, or a tiger in the jungle for attacking an explorer. That is their nature.

If there is anyone to blame in this fable of tragedy on the river, it is the frog, who, out of naivety or ignorance, puts his life in the hands of someone who, by his very nature, will harm him, even if he promises not to. In this case, the scorpion KNOWS for sure that what actually happened in the middle of the river could happen.

This is exactly what has happened to us Venezuelans when, for more than 25 years, we gave—out of naivety or ignorance—the scorpion opposition the trust to represent our interests against the regime. The population gave them the vote—they rode on their backs—to take over the entire National Assembly in 2015, only to achieve an unconstitutional interim government that was as corrupt as or more corrupt than the regime, not to mention a recall referendum that the regime destroyed using the decision of its courts. All of that was as bad as or worse than a scorpion sting.

The information published by journalist Casto Ocando from his reliable sources indicates that the scorpions were not satisfied with the crushing defeat inflicted on them by María Corina Machado (MCM) in the October 2023 primaries, nor with the fact that, with a little help from the regime and without having won the primaries, a MUD/PU militant ultimately became the opposition candidate, ahead of the undisputed opposition representative who had won an election, gives us the same message of illusory confidence that the frog received before crossing the river (see in Spanish Casto Ocando News, EXCLUSIVE: Qatar's other secret negotiation, in https://youtu.be/1mn268eSyxg?si=CBHb2BYrBLOSFHH9).

Indeed, the document referenced by journalist Ocando, prepared by teams from Qatar, shows that not only are the so-called scorpions we all know, proponents of yet another deception of the Venezuelan people, present there, but also—what a surprise—important figures from the Catholic Church, such as the Archbishop of Caracas, Raúl Biord Castillo, and the Rector of Andrés Bello Catholic University, Arturo Peraza.

And therein lies the gravity of this situation. It is not just that this proposal presented by these scorpions to the US government, through the government of Qatar, has been rejected, but that even at this point, the scorpions still believe that there are Venezuelans who trust that they will not sting them in the middle of the river. We must all have gone mad. Otherwise, how else would such political corpses dare to even open their mouths to resolve a disaster for which they have been historically responsible and are currently complicit? And the worst thing is that they believe the US will even buy their presence after the disaster of the interim government.

It would be unthinkable that the four political operators and main proponents of the proposal, mentioned by journalist Casto Ocando—Henrique Capriles, former presidential candidate; Gustavo Duque, mayor of Chacao; Gerardo Blyde, former negotiator for the MUD/PU; and Manuel Rosales, former governor of Zulia— would take a single step to cast doubt on the July 28 election results and call for a new election if they did not truly believe, like the scorpion deceiving the frog, that they could cross the river again on the backs of a bunch of idiots:

“A common theme is the refusal of all the actors mentioned below (i.e., the proponents of the proposal) to coordinate actions with María Corina Machado due to her refusal to establish new strategies and new social or political alliances. The opinion of the actors mentioned below regarding the finality of the July 28 election results is diverse, and given this scenario, they prefer to opt for a transitional government that will lead the country to new elections" (see in Spanish Casto Ocando News, EXCLUSIVE: Qatar's other secret negotiation, cited above).

In other words, without ANY support from Venezuelans—neither now, nor in the past, and even less so in the future—a group of clearly identified scorpions still have the audacity to maneuver outside the country to try to convince the owner of the ships in the Caribbean, accompanied by some members of the Catholic Church, who do not reflect the true essence of an institution that has repeatedly spoken out in favor of the urgent refounding of the nation, using the canonization of Saints José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles in an improper, shameless, cunning, and politicized manner, to sideline the authentic leader of the closest possibility we have had to end the Venezuelan tragedy and proceed with negotiations on terms unfavorable to Venezuelans. It is the classic and repugnant case we saw above of the scorpion trying to cross the river, openly deceiving the frog, even though it knows that by its nature it will sting us halfway across. It KNOWS it will do so because it is in its nature, but even so, it proposes something that will drown us all:

“3. As part of the process of canonization of two saints being carried out by the Catholic Church in Venezuela, a gradual process of releasing a group of people so that they may be granted amnesty has been proposed, the formation of a national dialogue table, which includes new opposition factors, and that a new political agenda be determined there that will lead to electoral conditions for the holding of a recall referendum under the terms established by the National Constitution, and the implementation of an amnesty process for a group of exiles. In return, he is requesting the immediate withdrawal of US military troops, the easing of European Union sanctions, flexibility in oil licenses, and the reduction of sanctions on high- and mid-level officials. This proposal, reiterated to the embassies of the United Kingdom, France, Colombia, and Russia, has been presented by Raúl Biord Castillo, current Catholic archbishop of Caracas and promoter of the canonizations, by Eduardo Fernández, Ramón Guillermo Aveledo, and Arturo Peraza, rector of an important university. Meetings coordinated by Mrs. María Eugenia Mosquera" (see in Spanish Casto Ocando News, EXCLUSIVE: Qatar's other secret negotiation, cited above).

The only thing that can save Venezuelans is their definitive conviction that these people, and many others who have proven themselves to be scorpions, CANNOT AND MUST NOT ever again hold any elected office in the future, and that when the rule of law and democracy return to this country, with solid and transparent institutions, these individuals will finally realize that no one wants them and that they will be wasting their time if they insist on seeking the citizens' vote. It is time for the frog to finally become aware of the scorpion's pathological deception. Without that, Venezuela will continue to endure the representation of that animal, beyond this tragedy, without emerging from the bottom of the river in an endless fable, to which the scorpions have led us Venezuelans over and over again...
