In the face of blackmail, let the people decide

Until the last minutes before the deadline for the registration of the nominations for the candidacies of the different political parties in the CNE, close to midnight on Monday, March 25, the opposition cards of UNT and the Plataforma Unitaria were blocked by the system designed by the electoral body. But in a clearly combined arrangement between the CNE and Manuel Rosales' party, mysteriously the system was opened only for the UNT party card just before midnight and this immediately nominated Manuel Rosales as candidate for the presidential elections of the regime on July 28.

Whether the CNE and Rosales had colluded or not for that laboratory move -and I think they did-, is not the important thing. What is important is that the supposed endorsement of UNT to the candidacy of the Unitary Platform, embodied at this moment by Dr. Corina Yoris Villasana, vanished in the last minutes of March 25. I have no doubt that the CNE system would not have allowed, as well as María Corina Machado (MCM), to register Dr. Yoris Villasana for any party, but it would have allowed Manuel Rosales, so that in a decision of political calculation, moved by the strings of power of the regime, Rosales achieves by a cunning move of an old fox of politics, what he could never have achieved by the votes of the Venezuelan opposition.

This macabre succession of events starting with the non-participation of Rosales in the opposition primaries, shamelessly saving himself for those last minutes of March 25, gives an account to Venezuelans as to why we have not yet come out of this nightmare that has already completed 25 years. The disappointment for this type of behavior of the political leadership that has led the Venezuelan opposition so far, is precisely one of the most important reasons that led MCM to triumph in the October 22nd primaries. Just imagine how many magician's tricks like that this representative leader of the political class that Venezuelans have learned to despise -the caste, as Javier Milei would call it-, but which is in no way willing to abandon the political scene in favor of the urgent change that the Venezuelan people desperately need, has up his sleeve.

By getting away with it, both Rosales and the regime are proving right those of us who insist that the country must be refounded to its ethical and moral foundations. Such performance now places MCM in the position of deciding whether or not to support an opposition candidacy with a shamelessly shady origin, which does not enjoy the support of the opposition people because it was not counted in the primaries, and consequently without any light of its own to win the elections against the regime of Nicolás Maduro Moros.

If MCM does not endorse Rosales, she will be accused of "screwing Maduro" and if she endorses him, she would be accepting that combined trap of the official opposition and the regime, as well as the dirty game of the blatant violation of her political rights and the rights of those who voted for her, by closing the way to her candidacy due to "political disqualification", and that of the person she designated.

In other words, the same official opposition, which would now back Rosales for a dirty trick, would be blackmailing her with this so that she would raise her hand to those we, the Venezuelan opposition, consider a traitor since the midnight of March 25. All this is the consequence of having followed the game of elections that should have been rejected from the beginning as invalid

MCM, perhaps following the advice of countless interests, ended up accepting the game of Maduro's tyranny, because in the belief of those same interests "he would lose the unique opportunity" to win the electoral roulette that the regime is setting up for Chávez's birthday.

The deviation from the route initiated in Barbados that would lead to free, fair and verifiable elections, and which was the existing one before this one decided to substitute the game (see The real substitute, in https://ticsddhh.blogspot.com/2024/03/el-verdadero-sustituto.html) brought -and will continue to bring- real and potential consequences for those who decided to follow it, starting with the one who is the only person who has the true opposition representation in Venezuela. MCM has something that the regime desperately needs: legitimacy of origin.

Legitimacy of origin is won at the ballot box. Maduro does not have it and needs to take it away from MCM to solve the continuity of his regime within the concert of nations. The mere fact that MCM has decided to transfer that legitimacy of origin, in itself non-transferable to another person, undermined his legitimate representation before the Venezuelan people. Now the official opposition of the Unitary Platform will demand that he endorse it to Manuel Rosales after this trick, in an unacceptable blackmail.

The mere fact of having closed the doors of the CNE to the only person who had the legitimacy of origin, was already a given that the same would happen with any other person she would designate in her place. The regime could not afford to compete with MCM or with anyone she appointed. And what those interests that convinced MCM to appoint a substitute wish to ignore, consciously or unconsciously (and I believe they do it consciously), is that with that they would be legitimizing an election that from the moment of the kick to the table in Barbados, was in itself invalid, not only because it did not follow the originally agreed route, but also because the legitimacy of origin that the opposition candidate has, in case of participating, would put the definitive seal of quality to any result in favor of Maduro that comes out of the CNE's trap on July 28.

It gives me some hope that the candidate in her X account (formerly Twitter) indicated that "If the candidate is chosen by Maduro, these are not elections" (see X account.  @MariaCorinaYA, en https://x.com/MariaCorinaYA/status/1772254780619972671). That would reveal that this important concept is clear, and based on that narrative we should react to this new trap of the regime and its opposition.

When Henrique Capriles did not recognize the official results of the presidential elections in those fateful days of April 2013, the CNE never opened 100% of the boxes, as demanded by the candidate, nor were all the receipts publicly counted in the presence of the witnesses of those ballot boxes. They did it in the CNE facilities behind closed doors, without witnesses and on the ballot boxes that they themselves chose. I have no doubt that the same would happen in the event of any opposition protest against the electoral results of June 28. That is the trap that awaits us.

Under these circumstances, the regime would be doing a favor to Venezuelans by not including the true holder of the legitimacy of origin, nor her designee, being preferable to reject and ignore this macabre electoral game to which they would be subjecting us, thus preventing the regime from using the presence of MCM or her substitute to its advantage, which would legitimize the electoral process of June 28.

As things stand, Maduro would continue his path without the participation of MCM or his appointee, in a process that cannot be called elections, which would lead them to repeat the same history of the electoral process of May 20, 2018, where the International Community disowned the result, and Maduro as President of Venezuela.

MCM would do well to take advantage of the occasion of this stellar betrayal of Manuel Rosales and the Unitary Platform with its foreseeable blackmail, to definitively separate itself from the last vestiges of that official opposition, presenting itself before the International Community as the ONLY opposition representation with legitimacy of origin in Venezuela, and with which from now on the criminality that governs the country will have to negotiate any agreement in the very foreseeable future.

From now on, our civil resistance should be focused on preventing the regime from obtaining the legitimacy it so much aspires to in the eyes of the International Community, and on the other hand, to use our own so that the leadership elected on October 22, 2023 may initiate a civic struggle in search of an alternative solution. We suggest that it be through the Constituent Assembly. In the face of blatant blackmail, let the people decide. That is our proposal...
