A coincidental proposal

Unfortunately, in the Venezuela of the 21st century, with the massive use of digital media and social networks, there is still a need to clarify something that is perfectly written. The 240 characters of twitter have damaged the judgment of people to such an extent that they are only content to read a message on the cell phone to reach definitive conclusions, confirming that people are informed only of headlines. That is the price we have had to pay in modern times for enjoying the exponential growth of communications. It seems that the more we communicate, the less we are informed.

It was enough that a respectable tweeter pointed out as his personal opinion "ANCO dissociates itself from the consultation promoted by the Interim". (see in Spanish https://mobile.twitter.com/EAristeguieta/status/1323069281509269505) as a reaction to the reading of my previous note (see The two Consultations, in https://ticsddhh.blogspot.com/p/the-two-consultations.html), so that everyone without reading what I wrote would echo that opinion, which does not correspond to what I pointed out there, nor to the documents I referenced which are public and verifiable, causing confusion and disconcert among all those who have followed the Popular Consultation. I would like to assume, as I do, that this personal interpretation, coming from such a respectable person, was made without the least intention of causing this confusion.

I must indicate, once again, that my personal opinion is not the position of the Original National Constituent Alliance, ANCO, whose official positions are contained in its official blog (https://ancoficial.blogspot.com/). And even if I had pointed out in my note - which I did not - that ANCO had dissociated itself from the Popular Consultation, this could not be taken as true without the reference of an official public position of the Alliance. My regular readers know that I always back up what I say with a reference (I don't usually take things out of a magician's hat like many people on the networks), as I am doing now. This forced ANCO to make a statement, as it did, establishing its official position (see in Spanish Comunicado ANCO: Aclaratoria Pública, in https://ancoficial.blogspot.com/2020/11/comunicado-anco-aclaratoria-publica.html).

But what caused such a stir, if what I said in my last note I had already pointed out in previous notes? That is, that the Government in Charge and the G4/FA politicians had proposed to the country a different consultation in the Agreement approved by the National Assembly on October 1, 2020, than the one proposed by ANCO on the occasion of its meeting with the President in Charge on September 4, 2020. Is that false? Is it perhaps a "spoilsport" on my part, as some have pointed out, because the National Assembly did not follow our proposal? Unfortunately that is the level of current Venezuelan politics, which is why our struggle will be increasingly hard not only because we are facing a murderous regime but also an opposition that leaves much to be desired for this historic moment in the country, and full of interests that are not precisely those of the majorities, which makes it extremely dangerous for Venezuelans.

The differences between what was proposed and what was approved by the National Assembly gave rise to a formal request from ANCO for the reconsideration of the questions (the only one that has been made, by the way), which at this time should be discussed within the Organizing Committee of the Popular Consultation. This request can be found in the ANCO's Communiqué of October 25, 2020 (see in Spanish Comunicado Venezuela necesita una potente y esclarecida organización ciudadana, in https://ancoficial.blogspot.com/2020/10/comunicado-anco-venezuela-necesita-una.html). However, whether or not they take the request into consideration is another situation that we will have to address in due course.

This in no way implies that the politicians of the National Assembly have to echo our approach. What it implies is that if they make a consultation different from the one we proposed, let it be clear to the Venezuelan public that it was not the one ANCO proposed to them and to the country. And that they cannot force Venezuelans, in the same way as the regime intends to do, by taking us like cattle to a slaughterhouse dressed in the clothing of a civil society that in good faith made available to them an unprecedented instrument to get out of the Maduro regime. Perhaps it was the mention of this in my previous note that bothered many so much, and the disinformation generated particularly pleased those who have been sworn enemies of calling for Popular Sovereignty.

But there was another thing that particularly bothered them, and that is why they celebrated the fact that ANCO had supposedly "dissociated itself" from the Popular Consultation. That Venezuelans are finally beginning to understand that it is they, we, all Venezuelans, who have the power to change things. That we are not going to tolerate that the politicians, whatever their orientation, do anything else with our will other than what the citizens are demanding. And that was reflected in the networks by supporting the position of the questions proposed by ANCO (which are also described in the request to the Organizing Committee of the Popular Consultation), in front of the bodrio approved by the National Assembly on October 1st.

But what I consider much more important (and which makes them very angry, not to mention the correct Venezuelan word) is that people are feeling that our proposal is in line with the genuine aspiration of the great majority of Venezuelans: first we have to root out the Maduro regime and its criminals before anyone dares to ask us for an electoral process with Maduro or any of his entourage of criminals. The Popular Consultation we have proposed is just that, and if it is distorted by any presidential interest of any political leader, it will hardly be followed by Venezuelans.

ANCO does not renounce the spaces of struggle, especially those where it can do something to make our proposal materialize. That is why it declared the country in the following terms: "ANCO ratifies its commitment with the country and will never abandon its position of struggle in any instance where we can defend the values and principles that have motivated the protagonist participation of the people in the solution of the serious crisis that afflicts the country for the rescue of freedom and democracy in Venezuela". (see in Spanish Comunicado ANCO: Aclaratoria Pública, in https://ancoficial.blogspot.com/2020/11/comunicado-anco-aclaratoria-publica.html). That is our commitment at ANCO.

Now, without the Popular Consultation being the ultimate goal of ANCO as a Civil Society organization, it is undoubtedly a fundamental milestone for the development of our principled proposal for structural change and we will do as much as we can, what is constitutionally necessary to make it happen as proposed. This chapter in the life of the country is not yet complete and its success will depend on the pressure that we all exert to ensure that this instrument is not distorted and can be truly useful for the purposes of displacing the regime, as all Venezuelans demand. Once again I am stating this personally so that there is no doubt: I will not be there if this is not the case…
